Bored of the Gym? Try Climbing in Northampton
If the gym feels like a chore, climbing could be the change you need. A full-body workout with a social side, at The Pinnacle in Northampton.
If going to the gym has started to feel like a chore, especially now it is dark by six, climbing is worth a look. You still get a proper workout, but the routes change regularly and there are people to climb with.
Why climbing stays interesting
Each route is a problem to solve: where to put your feet, which hand to lead with, how to reach the next hold. Our setters change the routes regularly, and at the Bouldering Centre a new Bloc of the Week goes up every Thursday.
What climbing does for your fitness
Climbing uses your legs, core, back, shoulders and grip at the same time, and it improves flexibility and balance as well as strength. Most beginners are surprised how tired they are after an hour.
Train like a climber at The Pinnacle Bouldering Centre
You don't have to give up lifting, either. The Pinnacle Bouldering Centre at Weston Favell has a gym with a squat rack, kettlebells and dumbbells, plus a MoonBoard, campus board and fingerboards for climbing-specific training.
Meeting other climbers
Climbing is more sociable than a gym session. People chat between attempts and swap tips on routes. Our free Pizza Socials, every Monday at the Bouldering Centre and every Wednesday at the Climbing Centre, are an easy way to meet the regulars.
How to get started
You do not need any experience. At the Bouldering Centre, start with a short induction, after which you can climb whenever you like. If you want to learn roped climbing too, our 3 Week Beginners Course covers everything you need.
What does it cost compared with a gym?
A single visit is £13.80 once you have been inducted. If you climb regularly, Pay Monthly membership is £60 a month (with a £15 setup fee and a three month minimum). See all our prices.
Frequently asked questions
Is climbing a good workout?
Yes. It works your whole body, builds strength and flexibility, and improves balance and coordination.
Do I need to be strong to start climbing?
No. Technique and footwork matter more than strength when you start, and you build strength as you go.
Can I still lift weights at The Pinnacle?
Yes. The Bouldering Centre has a gym with a squat rack, kettlebells and dumbbells alongside climbing-specific training boards.
How often should a beginner climb?
Two or three sessions a week is plenty for most beginners, with rest days in between to let your fingers and forearms recover.
